As cases of Covid-19 are spiking throughout the country and locally, we would like to take a moment to remind our parishioners and guests of safety protocols to consider before coming to mass, either for Sunday liturgy or for weekday mass or private prayer.
The safety of our parishioners and friends remains our priority. Please review the self-screening questions prior to coming to St. Stephens.
We encourage you to print and save a copy of these and to do a quick review prior to visiting our church.
1. Since your last visit to St. Stephens, have you had any of these symptoms?
Thank you for taking the time to read this information and consider these guidelines. We care about your safety and the health and safety of your family members, our priests, deacons and staff.
Now that we have been back to Mass for a few months now, we wanted to update parishioners once again and revise some of the Frequently Asked Questions that were sent out previously.
Do we all need to wear masks in church? Yes. The virus is still out there, and mandatory wearing of masks continues to be an important way to help stop the spread. Clergy and parish office staff wear masks throughout the day while in the building and masks are sttill required when attending Mass. This is for the health and well-being of all parishioners, clergy and staff and we greatly appreciate your continued cooperation with this policy.
Will another Sunday Mass be added? Yes! And with the addition of another Mass, the existing Mass schedule will change slightly.
Sunday 7:30 a.m. Mass returns on Sunday, October 4: As with all other weekend Masses, reservations will be required, the link will be provided in the weekly email on Thursdays;
Sunday 11:00 a.m. Mass: note the change from 11:30. On Sunday, October 4, the 11:30 a.m. Mass will be adjusted to start at 11:00 a.m. This adjustment is being made to accommodate the local Dial-a-Bus service that many of our senior parishioners use to get to Mass.
The Sunday, 5:00 p.m. Spanish Mass also returns on October 4.
What about the 7 a.m. Daily Mass? Yes!
Daily 7 a.m. Mass returns – Beginning on Thursday, October 1, the 7 a.m. weekday Mass will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (pre-Covid schedule).
Daily Mass Seating Etiquette: Daily Mass is “seat yourself” but we have had incidences of parishioners seatng themselves in pews that are clearly marked as “Closed” (at times even turning over the “closed” sign and moving it aside to sit down), placing themselves immediately behind another parishioner and too close for the six-foot social distancing. The tape was removed in order to make the pews more “welcoming”, but may have to be put up again if those in attendance continue to seat themselves in “closed” pews. Please be considerate of your fellow parishioners. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Are reservations still necessary? Yes. As Mass attendance “picks up” after Labor Day and as more parishioners are more comfortable attending Mass, reservations are still the way in which we can seat everyone safely. We continue to need to know the make-up of the family units that are attending in order to maximize seatng in the available pews and chairs.
What is our church capacity under Covid-19 restrictions? Our church capacity, under Covid-19 social distancing restrictions and church configuration remains the same, with the same challenges of fitting various family units into different-sized pews. With the addition of the Sunday 7:30 Mass we hope to spread attendance out more – you may have noticed that the Atrium is now used regularly at nearly every Mass.
Why do ushers have to take us to our seats? The ushers continue to be an invaluable asset for each and every weekend Mass. Their knowledge of the seating system and ability to assess “on the fly” where available seats are, have allowed the seating process to be done efficiently every week.
Parishioners should make every effort to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to Mass to ensure everyone gets seated prior to the start of Mass.
If your plans change, please make every effort to cancel your reservation via SignUpGenius so that your seats can accommodate another family.
We are thrilled that public masses will resume at St. Stephens Parish on Monday! Please note that reservations are required to attend Mass. While most aspects of the Mass experience will remain the same, there are several striking differences:
When you attend Mass, you will find that there are no missals in the pew to follow along with the readings. We are including some resources below to either purchase a print subscription that you may bring with you each time you come to Mass, or links to view the aids online. We hope that this helps bring the Mass even closer to you!

Magnificat is a monthly publication designed for daily use, to encourage both liturgical and personal prayer. It can be used to follow daily Mass and can also be read at home or wherever you find yourself for personal or family prayer.
Every day, in a convenient, pocket-sized format, Magnificat offers beautiful prayers for both morning and evening drawn from the treasures of the Liturgy of the Hours, the official texts of daily Mass, meditationswritten by spiritual giants of the Church and more contemporary authors, essays on the lives of the saints of today and yesterday, and articles giving valuable spiritual insight into masterpieces of sacred art.
Word Among Us: https://wau.org
"The Word Among Us is intended to assist people in reading, meditating on and understanding scripture [and to] provide sound, practical advice for Catholics on the living out of the Christian life... We can have a relationship of love and friendship with the Son of God."
Throughout its history, The Word Among Us has continued to follow this pattern of encouraging its readers to experience God’s presence in scripture and prayer and thus receive the grace of the Spirit more deeply in their lives.
The magazine's name, The Word Among Us, comes from the Prologue to the Gospel of John: "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father" (John 1:14). This passage reflects the vision and purpose of our publication: To be an instrument of the Spirit whose desire is to manifest Jesus’ presence in and to the children of God. In this way, we hope to contribute to the church’s ongoing mission of proclaiming the gospel to the world and growing ever more deeply in our love for the Lord.

This purpose is drawn from the universal law of the Church and applies to the episcopal conferences which are established all over the world for the same purpose.

Daily Mass has returned - Sunday Mass to start this week... Please see below for some guidelines and pointers on our return to Mass |
![]() |
It was so nice to have parishioners in church again for Mass this week! Thank you for your patience as we see tried out our new procedures and could see how it all worked in a smaller setting. A few points to remember, whether attending Daily or Sunday mass: MASKS: Masks must be worn at all times, covering nose and mouth, while in the church and throughout Mass. This is to help reduce the possible transmission of the novel coronavirus as we are speaking the responses during Mass; air continues to be circulated through the HVAC and fan systems. RESERVATIONS: All in all, this seems to be going well for Daily Mass, we are learning as we go as well about how to organize and use the information we receive. **If you have a Change in Plans: If you sign up to attend Mass and then your plans change, we ask that you please modify your reservation – this week we had several people who had signed up but did not show up. This is not necessarily a problem for daily mass, but we anticipate a “full house” for Sunday masses and seats will be assigned, socially distanced, based on the available seating in our church. There are only about 145 seats available, at 25% capacity. With the way our pews are configured, in order to accommodate a variety of “family units” and maintain social distance, working out the seating has been a tricky business. We cannot take "walk-ins" at this time, we are working on some sort of wait list system, but bottom line: if you do not let us know that you will not be attending a mass for which you had a reservation, you may deprive other parishioners of the opportunity to attend mass. COMMUNION: As you know from the video, Communion will be given in the Atrium at the conclusion of Mass. Please wait for an usher to dismiss your row before proceeding to the Atrium. Follow the social distancing markers on the floor. Also, once you receive the host, please step immediately to the right or left a couple steps before removing your mask, consuming and heading straight to the exit. This will not only be a safe distance from the celebrant but will also keep the line moving. SUNDAY MASS RESERVATIONS: Reservations for Mass for this coming weekend (June 27-28) will be available beginning Thursday morning. Watch your email for the links - signing up electronically is the preferred and most efficient method. At this time we will be releasing the sign-up links one weekend at a time until we get a firm handle on how all this will work. Please be patient - a lot of time and energy have gone into this entire process, but we won't know the kinks in the system for larger mass attendance until we start using it. Again, the Sunday obligation dispensation is continued and anyone who feels they should not come to Mass for health reasons should stay home with our prayers - the 9 a.m. livestream will continue indefinitely. WORSHIP AIDS All missals and hymnals have been removed from the pews to reduce contact points. If you would like to have worship aids to follow with readings, you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own. There are several options you can use for worship aids - they include the Magnificat, Word Among Us, and daily emails from the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Websites for each of these may be accessed on the button below. The Magnificat and Word Among Us are purchased subscriptions, a monthly guide will be sent to you. For the USCCB link, you may sign up for daily emails with the day’s readings or simply read them on the website – and although we typically don’t encourage phone use during Mass, in this instance it can be used to follow along with the daily readings (just remember to silence your phone!). A limited number of “Word Among Us” booklets are sent to St. Stephen’s parish each month and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For Sunday Mass, our Music Director, Anthony Marcella, will still be providing the weekly worship guide on the St. Stephen’s website. As another option, this can be printed out and brought to mass and will have both liturgy and music selections on it. Please take the paper with you at the conclusion of mass and recycle it at home. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~Romans 15:13 |
We are thrilled that public masses will resume at St. Stephens Parish on Monday! Please note that reservations are required to attend Mass. While most aspects of the Mass experience will remain the same, there are several striking differences:
Our staff has created an instructional video (see below) which details what you can expect for daily mass, as well as for Sunday mass.
The preferred reservation method is through our Flocknote SignUp link.
If you know any parishioners that do not use the internet, they are invited to call the rectory office to leave their name and phone number for a daily mass reservation.
** Please note that the SignUp link can also be found on the homepage of our website, as well as on our parish Facebook page, St. Stephen the First Martyr Parish Warwick.

To Our St. Stephen’s Family: We hope this finds you all safe and healthy as spring turns into summer and we continue to navigate the coronavirus health situation. Fr. Reynor and I would like to once again thank you all for your continued support and patience during this unprecedented time. Your emails, letters and gifts have been a blessing and greatly appreciated. Every day more news comes out on the opening of churches across the state in general and the Archdiocese of New York in particular. Here at St. Stephen’s, we continue to monitor the health situation and work behind the scenes to open St. Stephen’s for Daily and Sunday masses in a controlled and safe manner. You will be receiving several Flocknotes in the coming days with details on the information below that gives a quick overview and timeline of our opening plans. Church building:
Masses will resume on the schedule given below. Volunteers have been working to configure seating in the sanctuary that adheres to social distancing guidelines at a 25 % capacity as directed by the state and Archdiocese. Reservations will be required. Many more details will follow separately. I ask that you please be patient and flexible as we head into our ‘new normal’ and protocols are established and tweaked. This is uncharted territory for us all.
Thank you once again for your understanding and cooperation as we begin to open St. Stephen’s Church. We look forward to worshipping together even if the circumstances are different from what we know. May God continue to bless us all, Fr. Jack |

Important information regarding the opening of St. Stephen's Church for private prayer only. |

To Our St. Stephen's Family: The Mid-Hudson Region has finally been given the green light to open for Phase 1 of the NY-Forward plan to re-open the state in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic situation. We are pleased to announce that St. Stephen’s is currently making plans to slowly open back up for worship. We will be approaching this process slowly and responsibly, paying close attention to CDC, governmental and archdiocesan guidelines to open cautiously while keeping the health and welfare of St. Stephen’s clergy, parishioners as well as the community-at-large in the forefront of the process. Of course, the ultimate goal is to gather once again for Mass, but that will be much later in this process, we will be starting small and expanding as guidelines allow. While the archdiocese has issued directives, they have left it up to each pastor to determine when each church will celebrate public Mass again. Please read the following carefully for important information regarding the opening of St. Stephen’s Church for Private Prayer: Starting tomorrow, Monday, June 1st, St. Stephen’s will be opening for private prayer. The sanctuary will be open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be no private prayer on Sundays. A lot of thought has gone into how this can be accomplished and will require a certain amount of responsibility by parishioners to work effectively. You will notice that the sanctuary has been prepared in order to comply with social distancing and capacity limitations. Additionally, as sanitization is also a consideration, you will notice that entire pew sections have been roped off, while rows within sections that are “open” have also been blocked off. A lot of time, thought and effort have gone into creating a space that serves to allow parishioners to come in and pray while also complying with the various guidelines necessary to do so. We have begun the process of labeling areas of the church and pew sections - as you can see in the photo - for future reference when the time comes that we are able to open for mass. ***We ask that you please respect the boundaries that have been set, avoid areas of the church that remain closed and please do not alter any of the seating configurations*** Here’s how Private Prayer at St. Stephen’s will work:
The opening of St. Stephen’s Church will be gradual, this is the first step. The timing and logistics of future sacramental offerings such as reconciliation are being worked on and parishioners will be the first to know once those details are worked out. The Clergy and Parish Staff appreciate your patience as we work through this process. We all yearn for the day when we can return to Mass, participate in the Eucharist and see our family here at St. Stephen’s. This has been an unprecedented health crisis affecting so many in our country, state and, indeed, in our own community here in Warwick. By opening up our church slowly and thoughtfully, we feel we can best serve our parishioners, keeping them safe and fulfill our responsibility to help preserve the health and welfare of our community as well. May God continue to bless you, Fr. Jack Fr. Reynor Parish Staff, Trustees and Council |
This morning at 11am, Cardinal Dolan will hold a press conference to detail plans for opening our churches in the Archdiocese of New York. We are writing to let you know that at St. Stephens we have been working on plans, utilizing the guidelines of the archdiocese as well as the latest guidelines of the CDC, to begin to open our parish again, starting with private prayer. Detailed information regarding our reopening will be provided to parishioners via Flocknote and on the parish website in the coming week to 10 days. Let us continue to pray for one another during our time of uncertainty and physical separation. Blessings, Fr. Jack, Fr, Reynor, Mary Juliano and the parish staff |
Rejoice Always.
Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks,
for this is the will of God.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Last Friday, we provided a financial update of the parish. An important section of the letter was not included and I would like to include it here:
Our deacons - Tom and Dan - continue to serve our parish on the altar at Mass, which provides some normalcy to all of us viewing mass from home. Deacon Tom is continuing to "meet" with those waiting to received into the church and Deacon Dan is staying in touch by phone with our homebound parishioners.
While so very many of you "work" tirelessly for our parish and for the needy in our community always, we would be sheep without a shepherd without our behind-the-scense volunteers who maintain and update our Facebook page, our website and have crafted many of our Flocknote communications throughout this pandemic. A special thank you to Dina Tashman who is our lead Facebook Administrator and provides all the content for our parish FB page, Mary-Ellen and Bob Kerr, who have provided tech support and website updates, including the scheduling of all live stream masses and services and Katie Bisaro, Parish Trustee and communication contributor. These individuals, often at a moment's notice, update and share the most current information with our beloved parish family!
While Holy Week is in our rear mirror, this pandemic is not and our staff and volunteers will continue to serve you.
Easter blessings,
Mary Juliano

Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday “Blessed be the Lord, for he has manifested his wondrous kindness to me when I was under siege. I had cried out in terror, “I have been cut off from your sight.” But you heard my plea when I cried out to you for assistance...Be strong and courageous in your hearts, all you who place your hope in the Lord.” ~Psalm 31:22-3, 25 |

Easter is here at last – after what seems to have been the longest Lent ever – let us rejoice in the risen Lord! As St. Stephen’s has done since this crisis began, all Masses and liturgical services will be live-streamed and there will be guides provided so families can follow along. Please be sure to pass the following information on to family and friends who may not be able to celebrate with their own parish – we welcome them to St. Stephen’s! Easter Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord Even though we are unable to come together on this holiest of days and will be celebrating safely in our own homes, maybe take the time set a special place to watch Mass, dress for the occasion and rejoice in the risen Lord! |
Easter Flowers: Thank you to all who have given generously to decorate the altar for Easter. Fr. Jack is going to scale back the number of flowers this year and will put money donated for Easter flowers towards future occasions when we can all come back together as a parish family. Bells of Hope: Easter Sunday at 12 noon The sounds of hope will resonate throughout the Warwick Valley on Easter Sunday as the municipal officials from the Town of Warwick and the Villages of Florida, Greenwood Lake and Warwick have asked all places of worship to all ring their bells at 12 noon as a “sign of solidarity and hope during this period of isolation and social distancing due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.” Easter Offertory: Fr. Jack and Fr. Reynor once again thank everyone for sending in their regular offertory envelopes as well as those who have been signing up for WeShare, the parish’s online giving portal. As you know, Easter is a time a of increased revenue to the parish and while the clergy and parish staff have been diligently working to reduce expenses during this period, that extra financial boost will be missed. If you have not already done so, please review the information below on ways to continue to support St. Stephen’s parish as we head into our second month of being closed to the public. Offertory envelopes may be mailed to 75 Sanfordville Rd., Warwick, NY 10990. To make an online donation and/or to join WeShare, please click on the button below. Holy Thursday and Good Friday at St. Stephen's “The Lord gazes down from heaven and beholds the entire human race. From his royal throne he watches all who dwell in the earth. He who has fashioned the hearts of them all observes everything they do... O Lord, let your kindness rest upon us, for we have placed our hope in you.” ~Psalm 33:13-15, 22 |

Welcome to Holy Week! While we all wish we could celebrate together as a parish family, we must continue to be safe and responsible and remain in our homes until this health crisis passes. Fr. Jack has received several questions and suggestions for potential “gatherings” during Holy Week. He appreciates and certainly understands the desire to celebrate mass and the sacraments as a parish family but cannot, unfortunately, do more than is already being done to celebrate this holy time in the Church. He receives almost daily directives from the Archdiocese on all aspects of ongoing and upcoming Holy Week liturgies and celebrations. A lot of thought and (long-distance) discussion has gone into making worship at St. Stephen’s as meaningful as possible under the current circumstances and hopes that the entire St. Stephen’s family will “participate” in the liturgies this week and make them a part of their Holy Week celebration. Palm Sunday Notes: Some quick stats on Palm Sunday worship – over 600 viewers watched our Palm Sunday service through the website, nearly 200 of them live at 9 a.m. The service was also streamed on Facebook and reached over 1700 people in some capacity, with around 700 engagements (‘likes’ and/or comments). This is a wonderful outreach for our parish! Please continue to share the live-streaming and social media options for celebrating Mass at St. Stephen’s with family and friends who may be unable to do so with their own parish families. And we are also very grateful to those who added Palm Sunday to their offertory giving – it is greatly appreciated! Prayer Requests: Prayer requests for our online “Book of Intentions” may be submitted via email to [email protected]. Be assured your intentions are being “heard”! Please watch Flocknote, the website and social media for the complete Holy Week schedule. Below is the information for Holy Thursday and Good Friday complete with mass and liturgy service schedules and links to guides for each. Information on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday will follow separately. The guides are in PDF-format for ease in printing if you desire, but other solutions that we have heard for using the guides without printing them, as some are lengthy, include: splitting your computer screen with the PDF displayed on one side and the live-stream on the other; or, set up two devices – live-stream on your computer with the liturgy guide on a phone or tablet. Holy Thursday, April 9 Daily Mass is not said on Holy Thursday 7:00 p.m.: Mass of the Lord’s Supper |
Holy Thursday Mass will be live-streamed at 7:00 p.m. on the parish website and via Facebook. The link to the live-stream and guide can be accessed by clicking on the button at the top of our home page. Some notes on Holy Thursday Mass this year as directed by the Archdiocese:

Good Friday, April 10 Daily Mass is not said on Good Friday, there will be no Adoration 12 noon: Children’s Stations of the Cross 3 p.m.: Celebration of the Passion of the Lord 7:00 p.m. Stations of the Cross |
All liturgical services above will be live-streamed on the parish website and via Facebook. The link to the live-stream and guide can be accessed by clicking on the button at the top of this home page. There will be no Holy Hour exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Good Friday. Fr. Jack suggests that each family prominently display their own crucifix for veneration while at home. The photo above is courtesy of the Washio family, St. Stephen's parishioners, and features what Donna refers to as her "prayer area". Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday Information on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday Masses will follow in a separate email. Please continue to practice safe social distancing and stay home as much as possible until this health crisis passes. Continue to pray for all those front-line and essential workers who must confront this situation each and every day. |

To our St. Stephen’s Family: Please be advised that, in light of directives from the State of New York, governmental health agencies and the Archdiocese, St. Stephen’s Church is now CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. This decision was not made lightly and is in the interest of the health and safety of not only our parishioners but those in those in the community, as we do our part to minimize exposure to COVID-19. Fortunately, we have the ability to offer spiritual comfort and guidance via our live-stream capabilities and the wonders of technology. Rest assured parish clergy and staff have been working behind the scenes – and all remotely – to ensure that St. Stephen’s parishioners are ‘fed’ spiritually throughout this isolating and difficult time. A list of spiritual resources will be coming out soon in a separate email. Staying Connected:
The live-stream schedule is being adjusted as the church will no longer be opened up for the day. Please note that a reader is present at all masses and there is music at the Sunday mass to provide some “normalcy” to the mass experience for all.
